The first device introduced at Samsung Galaxy UNPACKED 2020 on February 11 (local time) was the Galaxy Z Flip. The model is a foldable smartphone similar to the Galaxy Fold, but it can be folded vertically instead of horizontally. Like a feature phone, it folds down to a compact size and is easy to carry. Here, let’s check the actual machine displayed at the venue of the event with photos.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip Display
The Galaxy Z Flip display is 6.7 inches long. The aspect ratio is 21.9: 9, which is taller than Sony Mobile’s “Xperia 1” and “Xperia 5”, which have a cinemascope size. When playing a 21: 9 movie or the like in the horizontal position, the black bars are not displayed at the top and bottom, which is an advantage of this aspect ratio. The resolution is 1080 × 2636 pixels, which is full HD +.
The screen can be split into two with the terminal placed
When folded, the click of the hinge moves to your hand. Hinge can be stopped during bending. With this mechanism, it is possible not only to open and close, but also to stop in the middle of opening and place the terminal for use. Samsung calls this state “Flex mode,” which allows the screen to be split into four top and bottom types. For compatible apps like cameras, the screen is split up and down to fit the fold.
UNPACKED was featured by Kevin Ichhpurani, senior vice president of ecosystems and platforms at Google, who spoke about the collaboration with Samsung. As introduced in UNPACKED, the YouTube app for the Galaxy Z Flip has been split up and down. Google plans to support foldable smartphones such as the Galaxy Z Flip as Android. It seems likely that there will be more apps that take advantage of this shape than just genuine apps.
You can also do selfie while closed
When closed, the size is 73.6 x 87.4 x mm, almost square. The upper part is equipped with an ultra-wide-angle and wide-angle dual camera. Beside it is a 1.1-inch and small “cover display”. The display can display time and notifications. You can also double-click the side key to activate the camera and use it as a small display for selfies.
Uses ultra-thin glass unlike Galaxy Fold
Unlike Galaxy Fold and other foldable smartphones that used plastic OLED, the Galaxy Z Flip is also a technical feature of using ultra-thin glass. The folds were slightly flexed, but to the touch, the impression was that it was stiffer than the Galaxy Fold.
On the other hand, the fingerprint sensor was mounted on the side instead of the built-in display. This is probably because the foldable display was difficult to mount. Unfortunately, Galaxy Z Flip is not compatible with 5G, probably because of its compact size. Even at UNPACKED, it was announced immediately after the start, but this is probably because the Galaxy S20 series compatible with all models 5G was behind.
Equipped with dual cameras on the back
The Galaxy S20 series is a triple or quad camera, while the Galaxy Z Flip is an ultra-wide and wide-angle dual camera without a telephoto lens. However, it corresponds to the “single take” of the Galaxy S20 series. It also has a shooting mode that matches the 21.9: 9 screen ratio.
